On March 17th, we attended the Social Work Day event, where different organizations and professionals came together to present their work. We joined the event together with the association Esperando, with whom our organization collaborates, and who work with people with special needs. This gave us the chance to experience the event from a closer and more practical perspective.

During the day, we spoke with different people and tried to understand how everything works behind the scenes. It became clear that many of these organizations are connected with public services and government structures, which showed us how important cooperation is in supporting communities.
For us, it was interesting to see how much coordination and effort goes into this field. It helped us better understand the role of social work and also reflect on our own role as volunteers and how small contributions can be part of a bigger impact.

In Italy, social work is acknowledged and appreciated, especially within professional fields. Indeed in Italy, numerous activities are organized every year to commemorate this day. This year, the “National Council of Social Workers” promoted several public events dedicated to training, analysis, and depth analysis of key issues related to the profession, also actively contributing to the implementation of initiatives organized by institutions, universities, and other organizations.
This year, it also published the following statement in the official communications of the Italian Government: “Approximately 10,000 professionals are expected to participate in the various initiatives, many of which will also take place in the days immediately preceding and following March 17th. In addition to the professionals, numerous students enrolled in degree programs in Social Work, as well as citizens interested in the topics covered, will be present”.
In Georgia and Jordan, Social Work Day is not widely celebrated, but there are other occasions, such as Labor Day, that recognize people’s work and contributions to society. In fact, albeit in Georgia is not as celebrated as other countries, however it is still recognised by professionals, organizations and also universities. On this day they usually do a small event, workshops or even campaigns about social issues. Overall, World Social Work Day is celebrated in a small and meaningful way, where students share their experiences, encourage more young people to become involved in volunteering or social work and promote the importance of social work in society.
We consider World Social Service Day very important because on this day we support and improve society. This day also teaches us values such as empathy and equality, showing us how people sometimes need the help of others and how this type of activity raises awareness and improves someone’s day. The activity we participated in overall was a simple but valuable experience that helped us better understand social work in practice.
